From September 2024 to June 2026, the Germantown community participated in 10 poetry workshops, generating over 200 poems focused on the mental health impacts of gun violence. Nearly 80 Germantown community poems were featured on the weekly Healing Verse Poetry Line and 19 were transformed into temporary public art installations throughout Germantown. Though this project has concluded, we hope the healing verses shared have a lasting impact.
The Healing Verse Poetry Line (1-855-POEMRX2) remains a toll-free 24/7 resource featuring new poems weekly and mental health resources. Call today!
2024-2026: A temporary poetry and public art project supported by the City of Philadelphia through Creative Philadelphia, and a winner of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge grant, this project engaged Germantown residents in healing verses of poetry that were a powerful outlet for collective expression, cultivating peace and resistance against violence in Germantown and throughout Philadelphia.
The project began with 10 community poetry workshops in Germantown that took place between October 2024 and February 2025. The workshops offered a safe and creative space stewarded by lead artists/co-curators Trapeta B. Mayson and Yolanda Wisher and a licensed social worker/trauma specialist team that guided 200 participants in sharing their stories through poetry.
Founded by Trapeta B. Mayson & active since 2021, the Healing Verse Poetry Line is featuring poems by Germantown residents November 2024-June 2026. The public can call a 24-hour hotline (1-855-POEMRX2) to hear new poems weekly written/recited by community members impacted by gun violence, and to access mental health resources.
19 public artworks inspired by the poems written by Germantown community members are on view through June 6, 2026. An opening celebration on April 11, 2026 kicked off the trail of large and small public artworks now on display throughout Germantown. Free walking tours are happening throughout May 2026.
