C Street
I want to remember the feel of heat rising from tarred streets
And red-bricked rowhomes on an early summer morning
When I ran out of my grandmother’s home
For a long day of play on my block.
I want to forget how things fell apart
When friends became enemies
And one by one, they dropped
Or got caught, and our streets fell silent
And cold.
