In the Beginning
before you knew the difference between mutuality and mutual funds
before you grew teeth
before you could spell your own name backwards
while standing on one foot and dialing a fax
before the gerbils died of neglect
before the graffiti screams on vacant walls
before kindness got stuck between the pages
of a magazine and the subway forgot to stop
but kept chewing tunnels under every-
thing we said
before you owned even a single cabbage
before someone bought the sky
before the difference between you and I
grew wide enough to fire a bullet through
before all that
before the song, before
the first note rose like a prayer and
shivered
